Three iconic albums came out on this day in Hip-hop, and a retrospect look qualifies a break from the mainstream at acknowledging the rap minds behind these memorable magnum opus'.
Blowout Comb (1994)
Acclaimed rap group Digable Planets launched their second studio album, which notably showcased the group taking a dive into more stripped-down, minimalistic sounds, and also featured appearances from Jeru the Damaja, DJ Jazzy Joyce, and Guru of Gang Starr. Though a lack of support and promotion led to a decline in their chart listings, many critics alluded the album as “a textured soundscape of a mythical world of rhymes, jazz, and urban ambience”, and agreed to both the album's formidability as well as attesting to the preservation of the group's prominent reputation.
Word Life (1994)
That same year, underground artist OC made his memorable debut with this critically-acclaimed album, which imminently led to his membership among the legendary group DITC. The album listed the hit-track “Time's Up”, which was later included Eminem's biographical movie, 8 Mile. The memorable song catered to OC's hard-hitting hooks against false images growing in the Hip-hop scene.
Disposable Arts (2001)
Silent since 1995, Masta Ace returned with his fourth studio recording with an album featuring Ace's storytelling forte, as he narrates the tale of a young man from Brooklyn, as re-enters a post-prison life—this eye-opening story eventually becomes regarded as “one of the best on a rap album”. Disposable Arts catalogued several critically-acclaimed singles, such as “Unfriendly Game”, “Acknowledge”, and “Take a Walk”.
