DJ Kay Slay died unexpectedly in 2022, leaving the Hip-Hop community in a state of shock. At the time of his passing, his friends and family vowed to carry on his legacy.

Legendary New York City promoter Van Silk is among those people. Last week, Van Silk released the first volume of “Spit or Quit,” a nearly 50-minute exposé of some of the best MCs in the business. From Ice-T and Naughty By Nature’s Treach to Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Digital Underground’s Money B, there’s no shortage of talent displayed throughout the video.

Other contributions come from fashion designer April Walker, Def Jam Recordings first publicist, Bill Adler, Video Music Box co-founder Ralph McDaniels and The Furious Five’s Melle Mel.

“‘Spit or Quit’ is a spin-off of my brother DJ Kay Slay’s ‘Rolling Deep’ series of MCs, which I helped with,” Van Silk explains to AllHipHop. “So myself, Nero and Kay Slay’s partner The General decided to continue the legacy. My team Preacha Earl, Freedom Williams, DJ Kevie Kev Rockwell, Sweety G and videographer E-Boogie got Volume One done with production by The Furious Five’s Rahiem and DaNyA the OG.”

DJ Kay Slay, whose real name was Keith Grayson, was hugely influential as a DJ, record executive and music producer. He was known for his work in promoting and breaking new Hip-Hop artists and impactful mixtapes, which often featured exclusive tracks and collaborations.

Kay Slay’s influence extended beyond the mixtape scene. He was also a radio personality, hosting “The Drama Hour” on New York’s Hot 97, where he played a mix of mainstream and underground Hip-Hop. His nickname, “The Drama King,” came from his reputation for being involved in high-profile beefs and playing diss tracks during Hip-Hop rivalries.

He released several studio albums, including The Streetsweeper series, which featured a mix of established and up-and-coming artists. He was not only respected for his dedication to Hip-Hop culture but also his ability to bring together artists from different regions and styles.

Kay Slay passed away on April 17, 2022 due to complications related to COVID-19. Following his death, Snoop Dogg, Ice-T, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, AZ, Run-DMC, Bun B, Big Daddy Kane, Coke La Rock, Kid Capri, Goodie Mob, B-Real, Memphis Bleek, Twista, E-40, Jim Jones and many more contributed to the biggest posse cut in Hip-Hop history, “Rolling 200 Deep.”

Released in November 2023, the track was divided into 16 parts spanning 62 minutes and featuring 200 rappers. It marked the fourth installment in DJ Kay Slay’s Rolling Deep series, which includes Rolling 25 Deep (2005) Rolling 50 Deep (2020) and Rolling 110 Deep (2021).

“I think Papoose oversaw the project once Slay passed,” Big Daddy Kane told AllHipHop at the time of its release. “I’m super glad that someone took this project over and got it out to truly send Kay Slay off with the honor and gratitude he deserves. He has always been a true supporter of authentic Hip-Hop and 200 MCs on the same track is a hell of a way to leave a legacy behind.”

Ice-T, Treach & Chuck D Join Dozens Of MCs For “Spit Or Quit” Tribute To DJ Kay Slay

Public Enemy, De La Soul, Cypress Hill, Too Short, Eric B &amp; Rakim, Dilated Peoples and Mistah F.A.B. will perform as part of the "Hip-Hop 101: New York to The Bay" concert on November 9 in at the Oakland Arena in Oakland, California. The show, sponsored by Live Nation, reunites Chuck D and Flavor Flav as well as Eric B. and Rakim. 

Oakland Hip Hop has played a pivotal role in shaping the genre's evolution, contributing a distinctive sound and cultural vibe to the broader landscape. Emerging from the rich musical and social fabric of Oakland, this scene is known for its gritty realism, innovative beats and a deep connection to the community's struggles and triumphs. Emerging in the 1970s in the Bronx, Hip Hop was shaped by pioneers like DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa, who laid the groundwork for what would become a global cultural movement. The city's vibrant street culture, with its block parties, graffiti and breaking, provided the perfect backdrop for hip-hop's early development. New York City eventually gave rise to legendary artists like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, The Notorious B.I.G., Nas and Jay-Z, among many others. It remains an enduring epicenter of Hip Hop creativity and a beacon for artists worldwide.

Public Enemy, De La Soul, Cypress Hill, Too $hort, Eric B & Rakim Among "Hip-Hop 101" Performers

Lil Troy, most famous for his 1998 hit "Wanna Be A Baller," is back home after a near-death experience. Earlier this week, the Houston native suffered a serious heart attack that landed him in the hospital. Willie D of the Geto Boys suggested he was "fighting for his life." But in a text conversation with RAPstation, Lil Troy confirmed he was doing "a lot better" and walked away from the experience with a fresh perspective. 

"I'm going to start speaking about taking our meds, going to the doctor and heart attacks," he said. "I'm good now. Feeling blessed." 

Lil Troy and Van Silk spoke to RAPstation in December 2021 after Troy survived a fiery explosion on Interstate 10 near Houston involving his own 18-wheeler. Troy, owner of Birklett Trucking Company, was returning from Arkansas when one of his trucks caught fire.

“I was on freeway about 10, 15 minutes,” he said at the time. “I started seeing smoke coming up in the cab while I was driving and I’m like, ‘This is not good. No, smoke ain’t supposed to get in the cab.’ I started trying to ease my way over to the exit, so I could try to get off the freeway so nobody else get hurt or nothing like that. 

“And the closer I get to the exit while trying to get off, I started seeing smoke out the hood coming up and flames started coming up by the hood. And I finally got the truck to stop. I jumped out, grabbed the fire extinguisher to tried to put it out. That wouldn’t work, so I just backed up from it and just let it go.” 

This marks at least the second time he’s survived the “Wanna Be A Baller” curse. The song, which featured Fat Pat, Lil’ Will, Big T, H.A.W.K. and Yungstar, is Troy’s biggest hit to date, but nearly everyone who appeared on it has died. Fat Pat was murdered in 1998, just months before the song was released, while H.A.W.K. (who replaced Fat Pat in the “Wanna Be A Baller” video) was fatally shot eight years later. Then Lil’ Will, Troy’s cousin, died in a car accident in 2016 and Big T, who provided the song’s hook, died in 2018 of a suspected heart attack.
