Adrian Young and Ali Shaheed Muhammad Bringing Hip-hop to Hell's Kitchen

Netflix recently released the latest installment to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the form the much-awaited series, Luke Cage—the origin story of the reluctant Power Man upholding the call to defend New York.

Cheo Hodari Coker, the show's creator, attested to providing significant effort in weaving Hip-hop music and culture into the new Marvel series, with each episode showcasing the name of songs by East Coast rap tandem Gang Starr.Coker also managed scorings from notable Hip-hop producers Adrian Young (Ghostface Killah, Souls of Mischief), as well as Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest). Their soundtracks incorporate a nostalgic ambience to the show as viewers are taken to New York streets. Moreover, Younge promises a thorough Hip-hop experience, not limited to rap music:

“Luke Cage is a Hip-hop head. But as, you know, being part of Hip-hop culture doesn't mean you kist listen to Hip-hop music. You also listen and understand the source material that created Hip-hop like the breaks, Jazz, and Funk... All the stuff that helped spawn the notion of Hip-hop. So the music that we make encapsulates all of that... Hip-hop, the source material, and a combination of these genres, in order to make something new for Luke Cage.”

To perfect their desired classic retrospect sound, Young and Muhammad have assembled a 30-piece orchestra, conducted by LA's prominent Miguel Atwood-Ferguson.

“It's basically if you can imagine the filthiest beat with a full orchestra on top of it. Look at it like that. That's the kind of stuff we're allowed to do,” reported Young.

The series' original soundtrack album is scheduled for release via online purchase and streaming on October 7, while The Theatre at Ace Hotel in LA will be hosting a live score music event the day before.

Young and Muhammad are currently working on a tandem project, The Midnight Hour, which is speculated to drop early next year.
