Bridging the Gap with Audio Push's “90951”

One cannot deny the image of a chasm dividing young and old in the realm of Hip-hop. Born into the tumults of their generation, hip-hop veterans uphold differing perspectives as opposed to a large majority of their younger counterparts. Despite this, it appears the millennials seek to restore their reputation, especially with Audio Push aspiring to bridge the gap with their debut album 90951.

The southern California-based rap duo rostered by Oktane and Price aren't veterans to the game, but with only a week following their much-awaited debut, their album shows they aren't infants as well. While not estranged from the mainstream woes afflicting the younger generations, Audio Push perceives the greater image of a nation drowning in negativity, and respond with unfiltered optimism possessing both the older generation's iconic sense of urgency as well as the refreshing “need to chill” vibe from that of the younger. It's a whole new Hip-hop renaissance, if you will.

Bear in mind though, they aren't pretending to sound more mature than they are. They'll still rap about weed, and sex, and twerking, and throw in unwarranted cuss words from time to time—but just like the latter statement, Audio Push does not deny the need towards a bigger picture, and that's where they shine the most, for although Audio Push characterizes itself into the conscious movement without necessarily preaching it. It's just there, it's who they are, and its embodied with the sound they accomplish.

“You wanna quit when you get fed up/ Cause the world got so much hatred in the way/ But today's the perfect day to make a change/ Somebody gotta spread love,” presents a sample of a sort of Black Eyed Peas-inspired positivity off the track, “Spread Love”. Indeed, the lyricism may come off as rather corny and overly-optimistic, but the duo deliver with an inherent sincerity that one simply cannot dismiss their efforts. And more than that, the track sends off a preposterously-different message: Specific reasons are overrated, the reason for change is change itself.

Joining Audio Push's debut album are Kent Jamz, Musiq Soulchild, Eric Choice, and BJ the Chicago Kid, with Hit-boy flaunting his oriental string-infused sounds on the track “Play Action”. The album features 12 tracks, all of which showcasing the duo's pride towards their hometown in the Inland Empire. And may I just add how refreshing it is to witness movements being made in places one would never imagine.
